There was a time when the château was everything in Bordeaux. Then along came an unclassified Pomerol estate, Le Pin, and one of the most dazzling clarets ever produced. Since then the consultant winemaker has become as important as the vineyard and vintage in determining the magnificence of a wine. Les Grands Maréchaux is fortunate to have the great Stéphane Derenoncourt - famous for his cult 'garage' wines such as Château La Mondotte.Yields of around half that of most Cru Classé estates result in massive concentration, while ageing is in nearly all new oak. Robert Parker calls his 2009 "an absolutely outrageous sleeper of the vintage" and "the best Les Grands Maréchaux I have ever tasted".
